Child Welfare Statistics

National Child Abuse and Neglect
a. Over 890,000 confirmed reports of child abuse and neglect each year; on average, 83% of the time the biological parents are responsible.
b. 4 children die everyday from child abuse and neglect.
c. Over 500,000 children are in foster care.
d. Children who suffer abuse or neglect are 53% more likely to become juvenile delinquents, 38% more likely to be arrested as adults and 38% more likely to become violent criminals.
e. The economic cost of child abuse is estimated to be $104 billion per year.


National CASA
a. Almost 900 CASA programs exist with over 57,000 CASA volunteers.
b. Over 2 million children have been served since CASA was founded in 1977.
c. About 57% more children need a CASA volunteer.

Georgia Child Abuse and Neglect
a. Every day, 59 children are the victims of confirmed abuse or neglect.
b. Over 250 incidents of child abuse and neglect are reported daily.
c. 64 children died from abuse and neglect in 2006.
d. Almost 13,000 children are in the legal custody of the state, at any one time.

Georgia CASA
a. In fiscal year 2007, over 9,000 children were served by over 1,800 CASA volunteers.
b. 47 CASA programs serve 120 counties and 44 of the 49 judicial circuits.
